M. Hamel- Teacher

Franz- Student

Story– Franz started school very late that morning. He was in fear because M. Hamel had said he would ask questions on participles. Franz didn’t read even a single word so he decided to run away. But he resisted this idea and hurried off to school.

He reached the bulletin board that was famous for the bad news. Then, again little Franz moves hurriedly to school.

Little Franz reached M. Hamel’s garden, he found nothing usual. Earlier there was great bustle but today silence prevails everywhere.

M. Hamel saw Franz and told him “go to your place quickly, little Franz. We were beginning without you”.

Little Franz was surprised as well as confused after seeing his well-dressed Teacher, Houser, Postmaster, and several others in the classroom.

M. Hamel started the class with his gentle tone and said, “My children this is the last lesson. I shall give you. The order has come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine…This is your last lesson. I want you to be very attentive”.

Little Franz was in complete shock after knowing today’s lesson would be the last lesson. He started to feel sorry for not learning his lessons and never give attention to his earlier classes. M. Hamel called Franz to recite his homework of Participle.

Poor Franz was not able to recite the homework on which M. Hamel gave a very painful response to what happened when we didn’t know our own language.

M. Hamel “Your parents were not anxious enough to have you learn. They preferred to put you to work on a farm or at the mills, so as to have a little more money. And I? I have been to blame also. Have I not sent you to water my flowers instead of learning your lessons? And when I wanted to go fishing did I not just give you a holiday”? M. Hamel also emphasized learning the mother tongue.

Franz was amazed to see his development, he is able to understand every point laid down by M. Hamel. The Writing lesson was started after the grammar period. M. Hamel gave new copies to everyone in which France, Alsace, France, Alsace had been beautifully written. That period was so quiet that the sound of scratching of the pens over the paper could be easily heard. Franz saw pigeons on the roof and thought “Will they make them sing in German, even the pigeons”?

M. Hamel sitting motionless in his chair gazed at everything as if he wanted to put all the memories in his mind. His sister packed all the trunks as they had to leave the country the very next day.

After writing lessons, they all had a lesson in history. Then the babies chanted their ba, bi, bo, bu. Hauser read the Primer with his trembled voice where everyone wanted to laugh and cry.

When the church-clock stuck twelve M. Hamel stood upturned to the blackboard and wrote “Vice la France” (Long Live France)

At the end of the last lesson, he said

“School is dismissed – you may go”

“Vive La France”!

Summary in Hindi “The Last Lesson”

द लास्ट लेसन

 यह कहानी  Alsace और लोरेन नामक दो जगह की है जोकि पहले फ्रांस के अंदर आते थे अब   उसे Prussia ने अपने अधीन कर लिया  था।

 इस कहानी के दो मुख्य पात्र हैं

 एम हेमल –  जो कि एक शिक्षक है

 Franz –

Writing Lesson was started after grammar class.

Viva La France
